Novell hat sich voll auf das eDirectory gestürzt. Der Suse kauf war rein strategisch.
Novell hat schon im Jahr 2001 erkannt, dass sich MS im unteren Servermarkt breitmachen möchte. Sie haben daraufhin ihre Lizenzpolitik komplett geändert und die damalige NDS umgebaut auf das eDirectory. Da das eDirectory "normale" und kleine Kunden nicht benötigen ist Novell aus der Massenwerbung und aus dem normalen Computereinzelhandel total verschwunden.
Aber mit dem eDirectory haben sie nach wie vor ihre Daseinsberechtigung.
Novell Netware war genial gut und stabil und mit der NDS vom 5er Novell konnte mehr gemacht werden als heute mit den Boardmitteln eines 2003 Servers.
Und diese NDS (eDirectory) wird nach wie vor in großen Unternehmen gerne eingesetzt. Denn es ist die einzige UserVerwaltung die systemübergreifend und heterogen auf allen gängigen Betriebssystemen einsetzbar ist.
